Welcome to Ledger
Ledger helps you take control of your digital assets by securing your private keys offline. Whether you are setting up your first hardware wallet or migrating from another solution, this page will guide you through the essential steps to start using your Ledger device safely and confidently.
Digital assets operate on decentralized networks, which means you are responsible for your own security. Ledger hardware wallets are designed to protect your assets by keeping your private keys isolated from the internet, reducing exposure to online threats such as malware, phishing, and unauthorized access.
Verify and Set Up Your Device
Before you begin, ensure your Ledger device is genuine and untampered with. Ledger devices do not come pre-configured and should never include a recovery phrase in the box. If you encounter anything that seems unusual, stop the setup and contact Ledger Support.
Connect your Ledger device to your computer or smartphone using the supplied cable. Follow the on-screen instructions on the device to begin setup. You will be prompted to either set up a new device or restore an existing one using a recovery phrase.
When setting up a new device, you will create a PIN code. This PIN protects your wallet from physical access. Choose a code that is difficult to guess and avoid sharing it with anyone. If the PIN is entered incorrectly multiple times, the device will reset for security reasons.
Install Ledger Live
Ledger Live is the official application used to manage your Ledger device and digital assets. It allows you to install apps, add accounts, check balances, and securely send or receive assets. Ledger Live is available on desktop and mobile platforms.
Only download Ledger Live from the official Ledger website or from verified app stores. Avoid links sent through emails, messages, or social media, as these may lead to fake or malicious versions of the app.
Once installed, Ledger Live will guide you through connecting and verifying your device. This verification process confirms that your device is authentic and running trusted firmware.
Secure Your Recovery Phrase
During setup, your Ledger device will generate a 24-word recovery phrase. This phrase is the only backup to your wallet and the only way to restore access to your assets if your device is lost, damaged, or reset.
Write the recovery phrase down exactly as shown, in the correct order, on paper. Store it in a secure, offline location that only you can access. Do not take photos, store it digitally, or upload it to cloud services. Never share your recovery phrase with anyone.
Ledger will never ask for your recovery phrase. Anyone requesting it is attempting to scam you. If someone gains access to your recovery phrase, they can control your assets without your permission.
Adding Accounts and Managing Assets
After securing your recovery phrase, you can install apps for supported cryptocurrencies using Ledger Live. Each app enables your device to interact with a specific blockchain.
Once an app is installed, you can add an account to receive assets. Ledger Live will generate a receiving address, which you should always verify directly on your Ledger device screen before sharing or using it.
To send assets, transactions must be confirmed physically on your Ledger device. Always review transaction details, including addresses and amounts, on the device screen before approving. This confirmation step ensures that malware on a computer or phone cannot alter transactions without your knowledge.
Firmware Updates and Ongoing Security
Ledger regularly releases firmware and software updates to improve security and performance. Keeping your Ledger device and Ledger Live up to date is an important part of maintaining strong security.
Be cautious of unsolicited messages, emails, or websites claiming to be Ledger. Phishing attempts often try to create urgency or fear. Always double-check website addresses and avoid clicking on unknown links.
Remember that security is a shared responsibility. Take your time during setup, verify information on your device screen, and keep your recovery phrase safe.

With your Ledger device properly set up, you now have a secure foundation for managing your digital assets. By following best security practices and staying informed, you can confidently use your Ledger wallet to interact with the digital asset ecosystem—while keeping control where it belongs: in your hands.
